What is a Changes Group
People meet in a group, then split up into Focusing Partnerships, and finish by coming back to the group. It is an open group where participants do not need to commit to joining every time. This is a wonderful opportunity to have Focusing Partnerships with different people, while still having the familiarity of a somewhat steady group.
Focusing with different people greatly enriches one’s own experience, and we deepen our Focusing and listening skills by experiencing each other’s different styles.
What will happen:
- A few minutes of shared silence.
- An initial brief sharing of how each of us arrives at this meeting, which provides a structure for each person to be seen and included.
- Everybody senses with whom they might want to partner—whether to Focus or listen first—and whether they prefer pairs, a triad, or the whole group (round robin).
- While still in the group, all partnerships are formed and agreed upon.
- Most of the meeting time is dedicated to Focusing Partnerships
We come back as a group at the agreed time for a final sharing. There may not be much that needs to be said, but it is helpful to close the group together. Some people like to share what happened in their Focusing Partnerships. This allows the Focuser to ground, summarize, and anchor what is most important from the session. Some Focusers may like to say, “My forward movement today is…”. Others may name a concrete next step that has come from the session.
In the whole-group setting, the opening and closing, sharing, and setting up of partnerships will be supported by me. I facilitate our practice to be honest with one another, both in expressing who we might like to Focus with, as well as in naming difficulties that may arise.
Find a Focusing Partner Meeting
Do you prefer having one regular Focusing Partner? You can also find a suitable Focusing partner in the additional half-hour.
People meet one another and decide, after a brief sharing, whom they would like to chat or Focus with in this meeting. The two of you already know that you are interested in finding a regular Focusing partner, but of course, you cannot know in advance whether it will feel right. It is a bit like online dating. You explore whether it fits or not, and you celebrate when it feels right, and respectfully let the other know when it doesn’t.
